Potential alternative tree species to Fraxinus excelsior in European forests

چکیده
Common ash ( Fraxinus excelsior L.) is a keystone tree species in Europe. However, since the 1990s, this has been experiencing widespread decline and mortality due to dieback [ Hymenoscyphus fraxineus (T. Kowalski) Baral, Queloz Hosoya]. Besides H. , emerald borer Agrilus planipennis Fairmaire), an invasive alien pest already devastating trees western Russia, spreading westward becoming emerging threat remaining European populations. While efforts control continue be priority, it crucial compensate for loss of its ecosystem services by elaborating restoration strategies, including search alternative native non-native species. This review summarizes available knowledge on potential common help forest managers cope with dieback. Although using natural regeneration promoting diversity can reduce impacts forests, our indicates that no alone or combination fully replace ecological niche associated (e.g., biodiversity timber). To fill gap, have considered are tolerant both A. similar forestry values as ash. Of 43 reviewed, few mandshurica Rupr. platypoda Oliv.) characteristics . performance their invasiveness potential, risk hybridization still unknown. With current state knowledge, thus too early recommend use suitable option deal The priority should conservation, regeneration, breeding populations well other Our highlights need controlled experimental plantations better understand ecology prior utilization forests.

Cryopreservation of dormant European ash (Fraxinus excelsior) orthodox seeds.
We investigated the sensitivity of dormant Polish-provenance Fraxinus excelsior L. seeds to extreme desiccation and liquid nitrogen (LN, -196 degrees C). Germination and seedling emergence tests revealed that the critical water content (WC) of the desiccated seeds was 0.04-0.06 g H(2)O g(-1) dry mass, g g(-1) (0.04 g g(-1) in the germination test and 0.06 g g(-1) in the seedling emergence test)...
متن کاملSex expression and reproductive biology in a tree species, Fraxinus excelsior L.
We investigated Fraxinus excelsior breeding system using field data collected in a natural population and in a seed orchard. First, we attested functional trioecy (co-occurrence of males, hermaphrodites and females), with males producing pollen, hermaphrodites producing both pollen and seeds simultaneously, and females producing seeds. Second, we found that the reproductive system of F. excelsi...
متن کاملMolecular markers for tolerance of European ash (Fraxinus excelsior) to dieback disease identified using Associative Transcriptomics
Tree disease epidemics are a global problem, impacting food security, biodiversity and national economies. The potential for conservation and breeding in trees is hampered by complex genomes and long lifecycles, with most species lacking genomic resources. The European Ash tree Fraxinus excelsior is being devastated by the fungal pathogen Hymenoscyphus fraxineus, which causes ash dieback diseas...

Heavy metal pollutionis one of the largest problems in the Environment and human being. In industrial and urban areas trees can give better quantifications for pollutant concentrations and atmospheric deposition than non-biological samples. In order to know ability of Fraxinus excelsior (Ash tree) to reduce the concentrations of heavy metals and compared with the concentration of thes...
متن کاملAdaptive potential of ash (Fraxinus excelsior) populations against the novel emerging pathogen Hymenoscyphus pseudoalbidus
An emerging infectious pathogen Hymenoscyphus pseudoalbidus has spread across much of Europe within recent years causing devastating damage on European common ash trees (Fraxinus excelsior) and associated plant communities. The present study demonstrates the presence of additive genetic variation in susceptibility of natural F. excelsior populations to the new invasive disease. We observe high ...
